About Acetic Acid Solution 1%
1% Acetic Acid is an inexpensive, readily available topical antiseptic agent. Its antimicrobial mechanism differs from conventional antibiotics—it acts through acidification of the wound environment, disruption of bacterial cell membranes, and lowering of intracellular pH, among other pathways, making it less prone to inducing bacterial resistance. At a 1% concentration, acetic acid has been proven effective against a range of drug-resistant organisms, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and has been used clinically in the form of surgical dressings and gels for wound care.
Main functions
"1.Eradication of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common drug-resistant pathogen in chronic wounds. A randomized controlled trial demonstrated that P. aeruginosa was eliminated in an average of 4.5 days in wounds treated with 1% acetic acid dressings, compared to 11.5-15.5 days in the saline control group. Another study in burn patients reported successful eradication of infection in 90% of cases within 10-14 days of 1% acetic acid application.
2.Promoting Chronic Wound Healing: In chronic wounds such as infected ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers, 1% acetic acid dressings effectively control biofilm and infection, promoting epithelialization and granulation tissue formation. In a study of 100 patients, wound cultures turned negative in 28% of cases within 7 days and in 64% within 14 days. Recent research comparing 1% acetic acid gel with silver sulfadiazine in partial-thickness burns found comparable efficacy and safety profiles.
3.Management of Alkali Burns: In cases of skin or eye alkali burns, 1%-2% acetic acid solution can be used for irrigation to neutralize residual alkaline substances and reduce tissue damage."
Recommended audience
"Healthcare Facilities: For managing chronic infected wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, burn wounds, and post-surgical infections.
Clinicians: As a safe, cost-effective, and accessible topical treatment option for wounds infected with drug-resistant organisms, particularly P. aeruginosa.
First Responders: For immediate irrigation and neutralization in alkali burn emergencies."
