About Cerebrolysin
Cerebrolysin is a neuropeptide preparation derived from porcine brain proteins through a standardized enzymatic breakdown process. It is essentially a mixture of low-molecular-weight peptides (approx. 25%) and free amino acids (approx. 75%), along with trace elements such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium. This unique composition allows it to readily cross the blood-brain barrier and act directly on the central nervous system. Developed in Austria in 1949, Cerebrolysin is currently approved for clinical use in 44 countries, primarily in Europe and Asia, but it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Its primary mechanisms of action include mimicking the effects of endogenous neurotrophic factors (such as NTF3) and stimulating the synthesis of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), thereby providing neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects.
Main functions
1.Neurorepair and Neuroprotection: In models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and ischemic stroke, Cerebrolysin has been shown to promote neuroplasticity, enhance neurogenesis, and reduce neuronal damage and apoptosis. A study in patients with moderate TBI demonstrated significantly greater improvement on the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised (CRS-R) compared to standard care alone.
2.Improves Cognitive Function: Multiple randomized controlled trials in patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia have shown that Cerebrolysin significantly improves global function and cognitive ability compared to placebo. A 28-week study reported a -1.708 improvement in ADAS-cog scores in the Cerebrolysin group over placebo.
3.Promotes Post-Stroke Recovery: Clinical studies suggest that Cerebrolysin administered in the acute phase of ischemic stroke may help improve motor function and overall prognosis. A large randomized double-blind trial (CODEC study) on post-stroke cognitive impairment has been completed to further evaluate its efficacy.
4.Adjunctive Therapy in Psychiatry: Preliminary research indicates potential benefits of Cerebrolysin in alleviating side effects of antipsychotics and improving symptoms in depression and autism spectrum disorders.
