About Epithalon
Epithalon (also known as Epitalon or Epithalamin) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (sequence: Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, AEDG) designed based on the amino acid composition of Epithalamin, a polypeptide extract derived from the bovine pineal gland. As a research peptide compound, Epithalon is most notable for its potential as a telomerase activator. In vitro studies have demonstrated that it can activate telomerase enzymatic activity by upregulating the expression of the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene, thereby extending telomere length. Telomere length is considered a biomarker of cellular aging, which has generated significant interest in Epithalon within the fields of healthy aging and longevity research.
Main functions
"1.Activates Telomerase and Extends Telomeres: Research confirms that Epithalon treatment induces telomerase activity and significantly extends telomere length. In normal human cells (e.g., epithelial cells and fibroblasts), this is primarily achieved through upregulation of hTERT expression; in certain cancer cells, it can also occur via the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT) mechanism. Animal studies have shown lifespan extension of up to 12.3%–13.9% in mice.
2.Slows Age-Related Functional Decline: In aged rhesus monkeys, Epithalon has been observed to restore circadian rhythms of melatonin and cortisol production. It also improves age-related estrous function decline in female mice and reduces the frequency of chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells.
3.Improves Glucose Metabolism: In aged female rhesus monkeys, Epithalon has been shown to correct age-related declines in glucose tolerance and restore dynamic insulin responses to glucose loading.
4.Potential Tumor Suppression Properties: In a transgenic mouse model of breast cancer, Epithalon significantly inhibited tumor development, with maximum tumor volume reduced by 33% compared to controls, and suppressed HER-2/neu oncogene expression.
5.Protection in Retinal Inflammatory Conditions: In a rat model of hereditary retinitis pigmentosa, Epithalon helped preserve retinal morphological structure and improved its bioelectrical activity."
