About EPO
"Erythropoietin (EPO) is an endogenous glycoprotein hormone composed of 165 amino acids. In adults, 80-90% is synthesized by peritubular interstitial cells in the renal cortex; in fetuses, the liver is the primary production site. Its core physiological function is to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, ultimately producing mature red blood cells, thereby increasing the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity.
The widely used clinical formulations are recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), produced via recombinant DNA technology, for treating anemia caused by renal failure, chemotherapy, and other conditions."
Main functions
"1.Treats Renal Anemia: Used for anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (including dialysis and non-dialysis patients)—this is its core clinical application.
2.Treats Chemotherapy-Induced Anemia: Indicated for certain cancer patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia to reduce transfusion requirements.
3.Other Anemias: Also used for zidovudine-induced anemia in HIV patients, to promote hematopoiesis after bone marrow transplantation, and for autologous blood transfusion preparation in elective surgery patients.
4.Investigational Neuroprotection: Recent meta-analyses suggest that EPO may reduce short- and mid-term mortality in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients due to anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and neurogenic properties, though it does not significantly improve good neurological recovery."
Recommended audience
"Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and anemia.
Patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia from cancer treatment.
HIV patients with anemia following antiretroviral therapy (e.g., zidovudine).
Specific populations in clinical research (e.g., TBI patients in intensive care)."
