Product profile

About Glutathione

"Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide composed of three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine (sequence: γ-Glu-Cys-Gly), containing a reactive thiol (-SH) group in its chemical structure. It exists in the body in two forms: reduced glutathione (GSH) and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), interconverted by glutathione reductase. The GSH/GSSG ratio is commonly used as an indicator of cellular oxidative stress.

Glutathione is widely recognized as the ""Master Antioxidant"" and is the most abundant low-molecular-weight thiol-containing tripeptide in mammalian cells. Its core functions include scavenging free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), detoxifying drugs and xenobiotics, maintaining protein thiol redox status, protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage, and participating in amino acid transport and the recycling of vitamins E and C.

Glutathione is naturally found in fresh leafy vegetables, fruits, and nuts, and is endogenously synthesized in all living human cells. Clinically used glutathione preparations (e.g., injectable glutathione) are prescription drugs approved in China for multiple indications."

Main functions

  • "Liver Protection: Glutathione is indicated for viral hepatitis, drug-induced, alcohol-induced (including alcoholic fatty liver, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and acute alcoholic hepatitis), and other chemically induced liver damage.
  • Reduces Chemo/Radiotherapy Toxicity: Used in patients undergoing chemotherapy with cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, bleomycin (especially at high doses), and in radiotherapy patients to mitigate treatment-related toxicity.
  • Antioxidant and Detoxification: As a free radical scavenger and detoxifying agent, it is used as adjunctive therapy for heavy metal, organic solvent, acrylonitrile, fluoride, carbon monoxide poisoning, and acetaminophen overdose.
  • Skin Lightening and Anti-Aging: Glutathione exerts skin-lightening effects by inhibiting tyrosinase activity (via thiol chelation of copper ions), inhibiting melanosome transfer, and through antioxidant mechanisms. Studies show that 250 mg/day glutathione supplementation improves skin elasticity and reduces wrinkles. A 2023 randomized double-blind controlled trial confirmed that oral cysteine peptides (containing GSH synthesis components, 45 mg/day) for 12 weeks significantly improved skin brightness with a good safety profile.
  • Ophthalmologic Applications: Glutathione eye drops are used to inhibit cataract progression and promote corneal epithelial repair."

Recommended audience

  • "Clinical Indications: Patients with viral hepatitis, drug/alcohol-induced liver disease; cancer patients undergoing chemo/radiotherapy (adjuvant toxicity reduction); patients with organophosphate or heavy metal poisoning; cataract patients (topical ophthalmic use).
  • Health-Conscious Individuals: Those focused on antioxidant support, anti-aging, and skin brightening.
  • Research Applications: Cell biology, pharmacology, and oxidative stress research."
