About HMG
"HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin, also known as Menotrophin) is a gonadotropin preparation purified from the urine of postmenopausal women. It contains equal proportions of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), with biological activity measured in International Units (IU), commonly available in vials containing 75 IU of each hormone. Clinically used HMG preparations, including highly purified HMG (HP-HMG), can be administered via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection.
HMG works by directly supplementing exogenous FSH and LH to mimic or enhance the physiological effects of endogenous gonadotropins. In females, it stimulates ovarian follicle growth and maturation to induce ovulation. In males, the FSH component stimulates Sertoli cells to support spermatogenesis (sperm production), while LH stimulates Leydig cells to produce testosterone."
Main functions
"1.Ovulation Induction and Assisted Reproduction: Widely used in clinical practice to treat anovulatory infertility in women. Administered early in the menstrual cycle to promote multifollicular development, preparing for subsequent ovulation trigger (usually with hCG) and assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF. In IVF protocols, HP-HMG combined with recombinant FSH has been associated with higher clinical pregnancy rates.
2.Treats Male Infertility: For men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (secondary hypogonadism) presenting with oligospermia or azoospermia, HMG is often used in combination with hCG to stimulate spermatogenesis and restore fertility. In one study, adding HMG to hCG allowed approximately 40% of patients to achieve pregnancy in their partners."
